How It Works

Tipping culture in Australia is much more relaxed than in the US โ€” there's no expectation to tip, and nobody will be offended if you don't. But if service was genuinely good and you want to leave something, the question of how much and how to split it across the table comes up more often than it should.

This calculator handles both โ€” enter the bill, the tip percentage, and the number of people, and it'll give you the total tip amount, the new total, and each person's share. No mental maths, no awkward phone-passing around the table.

It also works for any service tip scenario โ€” a great tradie, a delivery driver, a hairdresser, or anyone else you want to tip appropriately without overcomplicating the maths.

How to use it

  1. Enter the bill total.
  2. Select or enter a tip percentage โ€” in Australia 10% is generous, 5% is common for good service.
  3. Enter the number of people splitting the bill.
  4. Click Calculate to see per-person amounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Unlike the US, tipping is not built into service industry wages in Australia, and there's no social pressure to tip. That said, tipping for genuinely excellent service is always appreciated โ€” particularly in restaurants, bars, and for delivery drivers.

10% is considered generous for excellent service. 5% is common for good service. Rounding up to a convenient number is also perfectly normal. For takeaway or counter service, tipping is entirely optional.

Either is fine, though cash tips often go directly to the staff member rather than through the business's tip pooling system. Ask if you're unsure and it matters to you.

Yes. Tips received by employees are considered taxable income in Australia and should be declared. For most employees this is handled through their employer.
