Online Business Running Cost Calculator

Bring recurring software, infrastructure and sales fees into one annual view.

True Cost Net Before Tax

What this tool calculates

Monthly software and hosting are annualised, yearly overheads are added, and percentage fees are applied to expected sales. The result includes total cost, cost per sale and revenue remaining before tax and labour.

How to use it

Review bank and card statements so small renewals are not missed. Group software, web infrastructure, domains, professional services and other overheads. Use the total fee rate actually charged across marketplace and payment processing layers.

Useful examples

  • Seeing whether overlapping AI or design subscriptions are eroding profit.
  • Calculating the fixed annual cost of keeping an online store open.
  • Testing whether expected sales cover infrastructure before owner wages.

Important limits

This is a planning estimate, not accounting or tax advice. GST, refunds, advertising, foreign exchange, chargebacks, stock, tax and labour may require separate treatment.

Separate fixed and variable costs

Fixed costs continue even when no sale occurs. Variable platform and payment fees rise with revenue. Seeing both helps identify whether the best improvement is cancelling overhead, changing a platform or increasing contribution per sale.

Worked example

Software of $150 and hosting of $50 per month total $2,400 annually. Adding $1,800 of other overhead produces $4,200 fixed costs. Five hundred $30 sales at an 8% fee add $1,200, for $5,400 total cost and $9,600 remaining before tax and labour.
